Saying goodbye is hard. Whether it’s to a loved one, a job, or a place we’ve called home for a while, bidding farewell can be an incredibly difficult thing to do. We might feel like we are leaving part of ourselves behind. If you’re struggling with saying goodbye, here are some strategies that might help make the process a little bit easier.
First, try to stay positive. It might be hard to see the silver lining when you’re feeling sad, but try to focus on the good memories and experiences you’ve had. Remind yourself that although you’re saying goodbye to this person or thing, you’re also gaining something new.
Second, don’t be afraid to express your feelings. It’s okay to be sad, scared, or angry. Let yourself feel whatever you need to feel. Suppressing your emotions will only make the process harder. Try to return to your routine.
Third, stay busy. If you find yourself with too much free time, you might start to dwell on your sadness. To avoid this, try to keep yourself occupied with healthy hobbies that bring you peace and joy.
Finally, reach out to your support system. Whether it’s friends, family, or a therapist, talking to someone about what you’re going through can be incredibly helpful. They can offer you a listening ear and helpful advice.
Remember to be kind to yourself and take things one day at a time.
A little self-disclosure 🙂 When I was a child, I would see my mom cry whenever we left her hometown of Barranquilla to return to Bogotá, where we lived and my parents worked. It wasn’t until I was much older that I realized how hard it must have been for her to leave her home and the people she loved. As we left, she would always play “Mi Pueblo Natal by El Grupo Niche” in the car. Now, saying goodbye to her and the friends and family I have in Jacksonville is hard for me, but I try to focus on my baby girl, my husband, and the good things Naples has to offer.
